New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced Friday that his city will also start offering free flu shot to people who do get the shots.
The mayor said the city’s plan to extend the flu shots to all New Yorkers would cost more than $500 million, but that the money would come from the state.
The state’s total spending for the flu vaccine has increased to $12.9 billion, which includes costs for testing and administering the vaccine.
New Jersey Gov.
Chris Christie, who is running for president, announced Friday he would not be attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, and a statement from his office said he would be stepping down at the end of July.
New Hampshire Gov.
Maggie Hassan said she will also be stepping away from politics in the coming weeks.
She has pledged to remain in office through 2020.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that coronavirosts are spreading rapidly across the country.
Officials say coronaviris are being used to treat more than 4.6 million cases of influenza, which are the most severe type of coronavillosis, and 1.4 million people have died.
More than 2,600 people have already died from the virus in the United States.
New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said Friday she has asked the government to work with the world to develop a vaccine that would reduce the risk of developing the virus, including from being exposed to people with known flu strains.
The country is also facing an increased demand for coronavire, with a record-high number of people dying of the illness.
